 Atlanta Area Kamados
« Thread Started on Feb 4, 2006, 9:38pm »

Atlanta seems to be home to at least four different manufacturers to get kamados from. We have an ancient kamado originally sold by BGE before they went ceramic. Sorry to say I can see it getting thinner and thinner in places on the base as time goes by plus it has a long crack in a bad location. And...sad to say the firebox crumbled so I'm using a smokey joe in its place...which is passable... So we are in the market for a new one although I'll keep the the frankenegg until it completely falls apart.

So questions...

1. Is Primo the only one made in the USA? We were looking hard at this one because the factory is about 20 minutes away. If so where is Grill Dome made? The BGE main store is about 20 minutes away as well...in their old location they had "eggsperienced" eggs but I haven't seen any at the new Tucker store.

2. Price differences? It appears Primo would be slightly cheaper for us than BGE . I've never found the Grill Dome office (we tried) and the other place is really an iron works dealer that also sells a tiled kamado on ebay.

3. Used? Any way to get a used one? Stupid me I saw one in a thrift store for $100 and thought it was overpriced. It was gone by the time I realized even if I had to replace the firebox it'd be a deal (couldn't tell...was full of ash).

Help...

Yes, Primo is the only one made in the USA. Grilldome is made in India, BGE in Mexico.

Grilldome is less expensive than BGE or Primo. But only Primo has the Oval ;)

You might want to check with Primo or Grilldome to see if they have any 'seconds' or 'blems'. Check eBay.

You've come to the right place to ask questions. We pride ourselves on being "non-denominational" ;) We've got members that own FIVE different cermamics and they all cook well.

Welcome

What Rum said ;D. I know HVAC knows where the Grill Dome place is. I was unable to locate it the last time I was in that area. Don't think you could go wrong with any of them. I use all 3 and could not tell the difference in the taste of the food from 1 to the others. I do like the Oval probably best of all because it has so many different ways it can be set up and because it is made in the USA. If you monitor the forums sometimes you can find a good deal on a used 1 when someone has to move or something. Good luck.
