I got my mapp torch yesterday. Wow, I didn't know what I was missing. It starts the fire so fast with much less nasty smoke. I have used weber cubes and green gel before. I would rank the three ways like this: 1) Mapp gas 2) Green gel (really does a good job) 3) Weber Cubes (okay, but slow and smokey)

A mapp gas torch is the only way to go for lighting lump.

forgive my ignorance.
What's a Mapp torch? Do you have a link?
With my electric starter I can have my Egg at 500 degrees fourteen minutes after I decide to grill. Can you get things going faster with a Mapp?

Sorry this one slipped by me.:-[ Mapp is a gas that comes in a small cylinder just like propane. You have an electric starter torch and light the lump with the flame. Mapp gas suposedly burns hotter than standard propane. You should be able to pick one up at Lowes or Home Depot. BBQ guru sells a special wand to get a better flame spread. I personally use an electric lighter but may buy a Mapp torch when it dies. http://www.thebbqguru.com/guru_golf_club.htm

I posted this earlier under the New Owners Section:
I've used most methods of starting charcoal (except the electric starter) and settled on a MAPP gas torch. It was a modest investment, less than $40 at Lowes, and a single cylinder of MAPP gas lasts forever. Replacement cylinders are less than $10. I got the hose extension which makes it convenient to pinpoint the flame and easier to avoid the heat and sparks.
Two minutes with the MAPP torch does it for a low and slow. I light a fist sized area in the center of the lump for low temp cooks (225 deg) or three similar sized areas in a triangle pattern for higher temps (400-500 deg.).
The torch is also fun to use. www.bernzomatic.com

Yes, a map gas torch is the only way to light lump. Even much better than propane torch.

Well I finally broke down and bought the Mapp torch today. Home Depot had a nice torch head and two bottles of gas for $39.97 + tax in a plastic carrying case. I can write it off as a business tool expense . Had lump started in right at a minute. Much faster than the electric starter. Gonna warm her up for a spatchcocked chicken .

Hi Steve, I was a big fan of the green gel, but it just evaporated from the shelves in the past year. I will break down and buy a mapp torch or one of the "golf club" type propane lighters. My dealer told me last year that the green gel was taken off the shelves due to a product liability suit involving a user adding a big glob to an existing fire and it blew up on him. He claimed he couldn't see the fire and was trying to relight it. Make something foolproof and nature breeds a better fool. I have been using the Weber cubes and they are OK, but it takes a while to light the "Wicked Good Lump" that I am using. That's some good lump. I fill my firebox and get 35+ hours of cooking - easy. But it is hard to light. Smolder Away, Dennis - The Skillet

i use a double tip mapp torch, 30 seconds tops and i am good to go. i do havc, and use one to braze. my brazing rod runs at 1600, must be putting out @2200 degrees. i am thinking this is too hot, ceramic may not be able to handle it.
what is the firebox rated to withstand?

Mapp gas is all I have used since bamaquer suggested back when I still had just a h2o smoker. With the egg this is the only way to go. I have had it about a year and a half and still over half full. It gets used 3-4 times a week!
